One of San Francisco’s most popular greenspaces, and once the site of a Jewish cemetery, Dolores Park is a year-round draw for locals looking to unwind amid its rolling knolls. Sunny weekend days in particular make for a predictably thronged party scene comprising many different groups: kids enjoying the play structures at the south end of the park; Castro men tanning themselves on the southwest corner’s hillside (colloquially known as Dolores Beach); football players having informal games in the flatter sections toward 18th St; various dogs zipping about; and – given its location on the edge of the Mission – groups of slouchy twenty-somethings swilling cheap beer. To the immediate south, the tame side streets along Dolores Street are occupied by a number of Victorian homes in remarkably fine condition, thanks in no small part to the firm bedrock beneath, which offered protection during the city’s infamous earthquakes.
